Halinka Orszulok: The Great Divide

Halinka Orszulok delves into the history of Newnes, New South Wales, and its role in coal mining in the nineteenth century in this exhibition, which considers a time when underground resources were abundant with wealth and prosperity.

The Great Divide captures the collective memory of these places through painting, film, photography, and text – but the affect is one of displacement not nostalgia, with a town now vacant, in ruins, overgrown. Orszulok aims to reverse this disconnect through nocturnal compositions that suggest a human presence in otherwise deserted scenes.
