In celebration of the current exhibition ‘SOUTH: Contemporary Art from Australia, Mexico and South Africa’, Hazelhurst will be transformed into a vibrant venue of free family activities for ‘South Art Fest‘ on Sunday 24 August from 10am-5pm.
There’s something for everyone – from the serious art lover to the family looking for a great day out. Browse the art gallery and the market, join a guided tour, make some art, grab a bite to eat, enjoy a coffee or just sit back and relax in the gardens. for a full day of art activities and workshops, music, Wild Ones Art & Design Market and guided tours along with a delicious assortment of food.
To start the day, take part in an interactive guided family tour of the current exhibition in the Regional Gallery and discover the stories behind the artworks. All of the artists featured in ‘SOUTH’ push the boundaries of contemporary practice yet create accessible and engaging works relevant to audiences of all ages.
Get inspired by the gallery tour and join one of the free family art-making activities in the Gallery Foyer and studios. In the Regional Gallery foyer, you can try your hand at African beading and create your own bright and colourful necklace. The kids will love the piñata making activity. These cute mini versions will be the life of any party! In the studios, there’ll be free face painting, temporary tattoos by Tradies Gymea and a Science Station where you can create a brain hat and be inspired with the science photo booth from ANSTO.
Like knitting and crochet? Check out the Neural Knitworks exhibition in the Community Gallery and join the workshop to make your own neuron to add to the exhibition. There will also be a series of talks in the theatrette in conjunction with the Neural Knitworks exhibition.
Hazelhurst gardens will also offer exciting activities to entertain the whole family. Learn to drum African style in a fun high-energy workshop for the whole family. The gardens will also feature a fabulous array of artisan markets which you can browse while enjoying Mexican themed roving musicians. Over 35 stalls featuring jewellery, textiles, homewares and accessories crafted by designers and artisans, both local and from further afield. The Wild Ones Market will feature some of Sydney’s hottest creatives.
