Initiated by arts patron John Hindmarsh AM and presented by Canberra Glassworks, the annual Hindmarsh Prize recognises and promotes the level of excellence and skill amongst artists working in glass who have a strong connection to Canberra Glassworks and/ or the region. It offers $10,000 in prize money, a four-week residency and freighting services by IAS Fine Art Logistics to the value of $2,500.

Now in its third year, the prize was judged by a professional panel comprised of Nick Mitzevich, Director, National Gallery of Australia; Eva Czernis-Ryl, Curator, Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences and Aimee Frodsham, Artistic Director, Canberra Glassworks.
From 21 shortlisted finalists, Kate Baker was selected as the overall winner for her work, Lena on the Tramp (2018).
Mitzevich said the judging panel chose the work because it ‘…pushes the medium and gives us a very sophisticated resolution of a glass medium that feels entirely contemporary and rooted in the moment of now. It is the fusion of both traditional practice and pushing the glass medium to blur the boundaries beyond a painting, beyond a photograph and beyond glass.’
The shortlisted works will be on display in the Fitters Workshop, adjacent to Canberra Glassworks from 10am to 4pm from 22 to 30 September 2018. The exhibition will travel to the Toyama Museum of Glass, Japan, later this year.
