The inaugural Evelyn Chapman Art Award

Perpetual, as Trustee, is pleased to announce a new opportunity for Australian painters – The Evelyn Chapman Art Award – a $50,000 scholarship. This inaugural prize is open to Australian artists under the age of 45 for landscape, portrait or still life paintings made in oil or tempera. The award aims to ‘engender the encouragement, development and rewarding of artistic skill, through furthering the training and knowledge and skills of Australian painters.’

This grant has been developed in honour of Australian painter Evelyn Chapman (1888-1961) who spent her working career in Australia and Europe. During her studies, in 1909 the artist won first prize in the Royal Art Society’s student drawing competition, and later following the ending of the World War I, she found inspiration on France’s battlefronts and became the first female artist to depict the devastated landscapes, churches and towns of the western front. In 1920 and 1921 she exhibited at the Salon des Beaux Arts, Paris, retiring from painting after her marriage to Dr George Thalben-Ball in 1925; however she continued to support art education and practice, particularly in her daughter.

The Evelyn Chapman Trust established by the bequest of Pamela Thalben-Ball, Chapman’s artist daughter, will award the $50,000 scholarship. The winning artist will be able to use the funds overseas, or in Australia at a recognised and well-established art school, or undertake work at an organisation on a program, or project that enhances the artist’s artistic skills.

The National Trust S.H. Ervin Gallery invites artists to apply by submission, with one or more works, by the closing date of 15 September 2018, 5pm. The selection committee consisting of three judges will choose the applicant who displays the highest artistic merit. The announcement of the winner will take place on Monday 29 October and the winning works (only) will be on display at the gallery.
