Jason Phu: Some of the things that have come and gone with the waters

Jason Phu’s diverse, multi-disciplinary practice explores themes of identity, family, and culture, informed by his experience growing up in Australia as the child of first-generation Chinese Vietnamese immigrants.

Here, Phu’s site-responsive wall painting responds to the idea that the waterways and river systems of Victoria’s Goulburn Valley are the bearers and containers of the stories of generations of people who live in the region. His playful painting style incorporates a rich array of references from personal narratives, historical events, poetry, humour, and everyday vernacular.
