Established local multi-faceted artist and producer Kate Butcher has been selected as the 2024 Artist in Residence at Eramboo Artist Environment in Terrey Hills, Northern Sydney. The six-month residency provides a peaceful sanctuary for artists in the middle of the bush, using the natural surroundings of Ku-ring-gai National Park as inspiration, and includes a $3,000 allowance for materials, mentorship, community engagement opportunities, and a chance to exhibit completed work.
During her residency, Butcher, who normally works between Finland and the Northern Beaches, will leverage spatial scanning as both a technique and a method for mapping and shaping space to explore the dramatic composition of artistic practice.
“My primary focus will revolve around two key frames: ‘nature and destroyed landscapes’ and ‘society and concentrations’ contemplating what kind of artistic experiences and actions we can establish with inclusiveness and sustainability in mind.”
Butcher adds: “This contemplation necessitates an examination of the detrimental substrates created by human actions on Earth and questioning the potential risks and positive contributions that art can make in shaping future solutions that foster collaboration between human and ecological relationships.”
Local artists and audiences will have the opportunity to engage with Butcher’s work throughout her residency. This will include workshops exploring new technologies in creative practice, an exhibition of the residency outcomes, and a mentorship with the artist for local emerging artists.
The residency will conclude in June 2024.
