Ceramicist Kirsten Coehlo explores and reinterprets everyday objects in porcelain. Her seductive white vessels are often punctuated with metallic rims and small ruptures, reminiscent of rusted and chipped enamel kitchenware.
Through her meticulous porcelain re-creation of utilitarian objects, many brought into Australia from Asia and Europe with the wave of immigration in the nineteenth century, Coelho picks up on the trace elements of the worlds they are from. Her ceramic works are metaphors for the intersections of old and new worlds, evoking stories of dislocation, aspiration and endurance and reflecting on the role of objects in shaping history and cultural memory.
