Leonie Gill and Gabrielle Soulsby: Matter and Spirit

Materials constitute the basis of art making, influencing both form and content. Leonie Gill and Gabrielle Soulsby communicate the unknown and incalculable that reside within substances – utilising the characteristics of colour, texture, surface and chemistry to explore what the medium evokes emotionally and spiritually.

Gill combines wax, cement and plaster, often incorporating various metal, or organic objects into abstract and ambiguous shapes that assert, or suggest, the non-physical. While Soulsby’s works on paper consider metaphysical aspects through mark-making based on the human figure.
