Mark Bo Chu is known as a painter of Melbourne’s everyday – an aspect of his practice continued in this new series of paintings.
Here, he observes familiar and unfamiliar scenes across this city, depicting freeways and festivals as shared public experiences, and work and friendship, cherished in private. In his gritty and vibrant style, shown is that magnificence occurs at all scales across a city – from road markings to modernist statements. Through the expressions of its denizens, Chu paints singular and collective Melbourne subjects – pressing at what makes a moment, monumental.
