Master of Stillness: Jeffrey Smart
Edited by Barry Pearce
Wakefield Press
‘Master of Stillness’ documents the practice of expatriate Australian painter, Jeffrey Smart; from his beginnings in Adelaide until his last major composition Labyrinth (2011), painted in Italy, where he lived until his death in 2013. Illustrated with paintings of urban landscapes, studio shots with the artist at work, as well as personal and professional photographs, this book provides a unique insight and understanding of Smart’s career. Curator Barry Pearce questions: ‘What was the genesis of Smart’s preoccupation with parallel lines, cubes, spheres, curves and rectangles as the foundation of his visual language? And from where came his inclination to transform a cool, dystopian vision of the 20th-century city and it’s technologies into a startling new aesthetic?’
