Pop-Up Gallery on Bondi Beach

Throughout April, Bondi, Sydney’s most iconic beachfront will be occupied by over 40 Sydney artists exhibiting their work within a custom-built gallery made from a recycled shipping container. Works will include photography, paintings, street art, sketches and digital illustration, as well as skateboard and surfboard art.

Supported by Waverley Council, the exhibition is being hosted by LOCO Project, a new venture started by Sam George and Gerard Edwards. Sam explains “We saw an opportunity to showcase local talent right on the beach where the tourists and locals hang out. So we created a mobile, solar-powered gallery with a professional gallery fit-out. Its full height glass wall will be overlooking the beach so you can experience the art and the place simultaneously.”

“As well as showcasing local art, we have teamed up with a local fine art printer and framer to offer a print-on-demand service so artists are never out of pocket. We have local surfboard and skateboard manufacturers printing the art on their boards, as well as locally made organic t-shirts with the art prints. We are also collaborating with galleries and artist collectives to help promote the existing local arts scene.”

LOCO Project blurs the distinction between on-line and physical, exhibiting artists Australia-wide online, while the mobile gallery space exhibits art from the local area.

“We wanted the experiential connection between art, people and place by having a physical exhibition immersed in the local place that inspired the art. As well as live art each weekend the exhibited work will change regularly so its dynamic and interesting much like online social media platforms.”

This is the first of LOCO’s exhibitions which will pop up around Sydney and Australia showcasing local talent from different areas.
