Reality in Flames

An Australian War Memorial travelling exhibition, ‘Reality in Flames’, provides an insightful look into the harsh reality of World War II and its impact on Australian society. The Second World War inspired Modernist artists to create a new visual language that was truly modern in its innovative interpretation of the experience of combat, the destructive machinery of war and the social upheaval felt on a global scale.

The exhibition includes works by leading Australian artists such as Nora Heysen, Donald Friend, Sidney Nolan, Albert Tucker and many more.  The rich visual commentary by artists is an emotive response to a critical period of Australian history, where prevailing social institutions and paradigms were re-evaluated.
