Shane Pickett (1957-2010) remains a highly respected artist. This monograph charts his development from detailed landscapes influenced by Albert Namatjira to a highly expressive form of gestural abstraction; in an era of contested land and civil rights and the constitutional referendum of 1967. ‘Meeyakba’ is the artist’s traditional Nyoongar name meaning ‘soft light of the moon’ an apt choice considering the creative and healing path he followed from his base in the South West of Western Australia. His paintings were included in the inaugural ‘Indigenous Art Triennial’ at the National Gallery of Australia in 2007 and Pickett was a contemporary of ‘new wave’ painters Lin Onus, Trevor Nicholls, Rover Thomas, Queenie McKenzie and Emily Kame Kngwarreye.
