Spring. 1883

The hotel-based art fair takes over Sydney’s Establishment Hotel from 9–12 September. Adding to the busy schedule of Sydney Art Week, ‘Spring 1883’ aims to mix the best contemporary artists from Australia and overseas under one roof. The line-up includes works from leading Sydney galleries, Darren Knight Gallery, Sarah Cottier Gallery, Minerva and Yuill/Crowley, with overseas galleries, Dutton (New York), Southard Reid (London) and Robert Heald Gallery (Wellington).

‘Spring 1883’ flips the traditional art fair model by checking it into a hotel for a boutique site that allows the art to be interacted with differently. Fair director Luisa Bosci says on the advantages of a non-traditional model that “participating galleries are not limited to the somewhat sterile, white booth of the traditional art fair. This allows for experimentation and surprise, but more importantly, the hotel art fair creates an experiential journey, through which visitors can interact with artists and gallerists in a relaxed environment. What’s more, the domestic context of the hotel suite gives private clients a keen idea of how an art work might look in their own homes.”

This is the first time the fair has come to Sydney, as well as the first time it has taken over an entire hotel. Bosci says, “Discovering each gallery’s unique response to their hotel suite and witnessing the public’s engagement with it is what I am most looking forward to.”
Admission is free and open to the public.
