the churchie emerging art prize 2023

Here, thirteen finalists explore the theme of context through painting, sculpture, video, drawing, printmaking, and photography. Tracing the material and cultural implications of extraction and storage, Wiradjuri artist Joel Sherwood Spring’s winning two-channel video work, Diggermode, 2022, uses artificial intelligence to create landscapes – in the style of Arrernte artist Albert Namatjira – being torn apart by mining machinery. And Special Commendation prize winner, Gamillaaray artist Debbie Taylor Worley, explores “women’s business” rituals and connects with her ancestors by using earth, natural water sources, landscape, and other natural mediums.
