Heide Museum of Modern Art presents an intimate, ‘behind-the-scenes’ look at the prolific, boundary-breaking work of Mike Brown, from his early days with the collaborative artist group the Imitation Realists, known for their irreverent assemblage works, to the final years of his life.
The exhibition looks at Brown’s embracing of psychedelia and counter-culture in the 1970s; his exploration of sexuality and social taboos that at times tested the limits of censorship; and his growing interest in a democratic concept of art, as evidenced by his commitment to the ideal of graffiti and street-art and his production of affordable and widely distributable artworks like posters, prints and printed-t-shirts. Unstoppable in his creativity, Brown would transform all manner of objects and surfaces into works of art.
