Timothy Cook is an indigenous Tiwi artist who works out of Northern Territory’s Jilamara Arts and Crafts Association. He generates astonishing movement and striking contrasts between light and dark pigment and has an ability to create the effect of circular shapes floating within the canvas, defying the thick application, dense surfaces and ‘bleeding’ of the natural ochres.
His free flowing paintings are simultaneously heightened and restrained by what appear as irregular lines and dots, all of which are pulled together by his ability to organise the composition, resonating with an authenticity of spirit and design, and featuring characteristically bold lines (marlipinyini) and dots (pwanga).
