‘TIWI TRADITION’ is an exhibition born of the positive response to the artistic practices of the Munupi artists. The artists come from Melville Island, a remote rainforest island, with sandy beaches and waterholes that’s accessible only by barge or light aircraft. The remoteness feeds their creative and artistic strength, as evidenced in their artistic output. The strong response influenced the directors of Artitja Fine Art to further their ties with the community and to further promote the Munupi artists.
Exhibiting artist Francesca (Nellie) Puruntatameri will travel to South Fremantle to represent her painting community at the opening and will perform a ceremonial dance on the night.
