Byron Bay-based artist Vicki Stavrou creates works with often hazy, cloudless skies; the arrangement of flat, geometric planes promoting an atmosphere of stasis and silence, the only apparent movement, subtle – pool water ripples of occasional swimmers.
The paintings of Sunny Side Up are quite small, with the artist’s preference being to provide ‘close-ups’ of selected areas – parts of the houses disappearing from the picture plane through deliberate cropping. Here, Stavrou’s mid-century homes are portrayed with a two-dimensional ‘frontality’ organised into hard-edged geometric divisions – soft-hued, less distinct foliage shimmering in contrast.
