Zan Wimberley: The Burnt

A large neon piece is installed high on the gallery wall and set against a dark background of oiled and charred-black Oregon timber, nearby three light boxes act as pillars radiating soft, directional light.

The shrug emoticon depicted belongs to a group of Japanese characters that have become Internet shorthand for a feeling of resignation. To Zan Wimberley, this symbol epitomises our apathy toward climate change action. In this sombre, worship-like setting she urges us to reconsider our civic responsibility.
