The 2018 Fleurieu Biennale Art Prize winners | James Tylor & Laura Wills

The ‘Fleurieu Biennale Art Prize’ is a non-acquisitive South Australian award for two and three-dimensional artworks. Artists were invited to respond to the theme ‘A Sense of Place’.

We congratulate South Australia-based artists James Tylor & Laura Wills who have been awarded the 2018 prize. The duo are the recipients of the $25,000 award for their collaborative artwork Hidden Landscapes: Kangaroo Island.

Examining experimental and historical photographic processes Tylor creates contemporary artworks, which reference Australian society and history. While Wills’, inspired by social and environmental issues works across a range of media including drawing and installation, with an interest in found materials.

The judges Christopher Orchard, Emma Fey and Godwin Bradbeer, selected Tylor and Wills collaboration for the major prize from a large number of entrants this year, and also announced the Highly Commended awards which went to artists Lucy Bonnin, Celia Morgan, David Russell, Louise Feneley, Renate Nisi and Sarah Tomasetti. All winners and finalists artworks are on show across three gallery venues in South Australia, until 22 July.

The ‘Fleurieu Biennale’ was established in 1998 by David Dridan, Greg Trott and Tony Parkinson and is celebrating its milestone 20th anniversary in 2018.

Entries for the 2020 ‘Fleurieu Biennale’ will open late in 2019.
