In Sign Language – a two-artist show by Blak Douglas and Jarra Karalinar Steel –, Douglas views road-affiliated signage as an opportunity for “savvy activism” and Steel draws on the visual language of advertising and generic lightbox signage to consider what is lost when Indigenous imagery and language are reduced to consumable symbols.
Works on show include Douglas’ Are we there yet (study), 2025, which renames Australia’s major cities – in order of the 2025 census population numbers – with their correct First Nations language reference.
