Michelle Hamer: One Wall Two Jails

Michelle Hamer’s recent travels took her on a journey across dangerous Israeli-Palestinian and US-Mexican border zones – an experience that was physically, mentally and emotionally confronting, challenging her own cultural and political ideas. From her observations she created a new body of hand-stitched tapestries that survey these landscapes and explore how people stand up to fear in the face of adversity – getting on with life in lands that are rife with persistent hostilities and conflict.

Imploding Explosions, 2017, hand stitching, mixed yarn on perforated plastic, 66 x 101.5cm
