Curated by Geraldine Barlow, ‘Direct Democracy’ explores shifting forms of political agency and the changing nature of democratic traditions. By reflecting contemporary social movements, unrest and change, it looks at the opportunities and dangers of our continuing political transformation, and seeks to unpack new democratic models and possibilities for the future.
Recent political occurrences such as the Occupy Movement, the Arab Spring, and the Global Financial Crisis are highlighted as endeavors for autonomy and self-definition. By looking at these movements, the works consider deconstruction and resistance in connection with the need to collaborate and rebuild in relation to the interplay of dynamics in leadership and governance.
