Palonen focuses on personal experiences of the natural world within artificial and constructed landscapes. In her diverse practice, Palonen works with oil and watercolour painting, and creates cast resin and mixed media figurative sculptures.
For her first solo exhibition with Gould Galleries, she draws on ambiguous and stylised natural imagery, seeking to explore our complicated and distanced relationship with nature in the urban environment. She contrasts artificial representations of nature found in cityscapes with the ideal of an animated natural wilderness, referencing structured public parks and gardens, wallpapers and the botanical filigree which proliferates in décor and architecture throughout the city.
