The Lester Prize is an annual award exhibition celebrating contemporary Australian portraiture. This year’s forty finalists demonstrate the relevance of the tradition and innovation of this complex artform. They employ portraiture to offer relatable and compelling portrayals of our shared human experience, revealing the interior worlds of the artist and their subjects whilst reflecting on the social frameworks that have shaped their relationships. Working across various art historical traditions while employing experimental methods and materials, this exhibition extends how we understand and appreciate the diversity of human existence.
