Widely known as a painter, Browne also works in photographic and printmaking mediums. This exhibition showcases six large-scale intaglio etchings, produced as the result of winning the 2013 Australian Print Workshop Collie Print Trust Printmaking Fellowship.
Working with intaglio techniques such as traditional etching in hard-ground, aquatint, spit-bite, dry point and lift-ground, Browne explores subject matter on the periphery of urban environments – an extension of his broader artistic practice of recent years. Of the work’s quality, Kirrily Hammond observes in her catalogue essay, “Stray marks litter the surfaces of the prints – these incidental textures are the result of foul biting and remind the viewer of the physicality of the etching process. They also recall the texture of the streetscapes from which the images were derived”.
