The Art of the Gija People

This group exhibition presents paintings from Rusty Peters, Phyllis Thomas, Peggy Patrick, Sade Carrington and Gordon Barney. The senior artists all hail from the East Kimberley area of Western Australia and aim to put cross-cultural communication and education into practice through art. Country is mapped with ochre to illustrate the present and the past, the artists’ personal lives and those of their ancestors. Natural forms and geographic locations articulate cultural histories. Features in the landscape such as hills, trees, rocks, waterholes and rivers appear as motifs but, in fact, represent the history of the land.
