‘Art in Public Places’ is coordinated by Hobsons Bay City Council as a city-wide event that exhibits the artwork of western region artists in unexpected places across Hobsons Bay.
Artists in the inner west get the opportunity to exhibit their art in local businesses such as cafes, pubs and shops as well as many other unexpected venues.
The project aims to strengthen the community through building stronger partnerships between artists and businesses in the local district.
‘Art in Public Places’ started in 2004 as part of the visual arts program of the Williamstown Summer Festival. The project was so successful that it was expanded across the city so artists and businesses throughout Hobsons Bay could participate. Participation in ‘Art in Public Places’ is an effective way to promote businesses and artists in Hobsons Bay. Various marketing and media attention surrounds the project increasing the profile of participating businesses and artists.
Since the project has been running, it has enabled over 500 artists to exhibit in businesses and various venues in Hobsons Bay and expanded to include numerous community events and organisations. With more than 60 exhibitions, arts events, installations, screenings, competitions, group shows, workshops, talks, open days and more, it’s planned that the City of Hobsons Bay will become one great big gallery for everyone to enjoy throughout this month-long celebration of all things creative.
