Geological cross sections and sediment layers record past events, catastrophes, the shift and flow of elemental forces over time. These works reference the geology of specific places across the continent from the Kimberley to NSW’s South Coast – they are essentially abstract improvisations of texture and colour that aim to facilitate a rich visual experience for the viewer and convey the ‘essence’ of place.
Using a mixture of sand, pigments and acrylic binder, Kate Briscoe manipulates and plays with surface textures. The combination of sand and pigment gives the surface the ability to respond to varying light conditions, much as cliff and rock faces in the landscape respond to light.
