Capital and country: the Federation years 1900–1914

This collection of Australian landscapes and portraits from the National Gallery of Australia is the first exhibition to focus on Australian painting from this formative era of the nation’s history.

At a time when many Australian painters travelled to Europe to experience the ‘Old World’, this exhibition draws together work from the Australian bush in a newly federated era with impressions of European city life by Australians living in London and Paris.

The exhibition showcases significant works from the national collections of the Parliament of Australia and the National Library of Australia, including Tom Roberts’ sketch that captures the opening of Australia’s first Federal Parliament in 1901.
