“An ambivalence of display and disguise appears in Christian Thompson’s new series of photographic self-portraits. Each image is a complex microcosm in which Thompson draws on his training in sculpture and textiles to build a photograph with, as he says, the mindset of a sculptor. The frontal head-shots conjure associations with the id photo, the criminal mug-shot, the formal portrait, icons, and colonial photographic studies of indigenous peoples.”
