The works of two iconic Australian printmakers – Margaret Preston (1875–1963) and Cressida Campbell – feature alongside eighteenth and nineteenth century Japanese woodblock prints (Ukiyo-e) from the Geelong Gallery collection. This exhibition, specifically, examines the influence of the historical artform, its narrative and decorative style, on the artmaking of these two artists, known for their exquisite picturing of Australian native flora and still life arrangements.
Preston’s Japanese-inspired woodcut process and aesthetic to her hand-coloured prints are explored, as well as Campbell’s fascination with colour, patterning and Ukiyo-e compositions.
