Dark Imaginings: Gothic Tales of Wonder

Marking a number of Gothic anniversaries – including the bicentenary of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein – this exhibition traces Gothicism from the mid-1800s to the end of the 19th century. It features artworks from the University’s Special Collections by artists including Henry Fuseli, Salvator Rosa, G.B. Piranesi, Francisco Goya, John Martin and Charles Méryon, who explored dark places and psychological states. The show also includes thematic spaces such as a drawing room celebrating Gothic literature, and a space dedicated to ‘Graveyard poets’ and ‘resurrectionists’.
