Australian born, New York-based artist Denise Green stages her first solo show in Sydney since 2010. The exhibition is comprised of vibrant abstract paintings alongside a new series of collaged works that juxtapose her distinctive abstract motifs against photographic fragments. Although Green comes from a strong tradition of abstraction, having studied under Mark Rothko and Robert Motherwell, her work integrates narrative reference and holds together complex webs of meaning.
Green has been the subject of nine museum retrospectives in the past fifteen years, including shows at MoMA PS1 in New York (1999), the Art Gallery of New South Wales (2001) and the Museum Kurhaus Kleve in Germany (2006). In 2007 she was awarded the Order of Australia.
