Deadpan humour and unflinching honesty are hallmarks of emerging artists Raffi Butler and Ellie Ryan’s practice with their created works exploring the juxtaposition between playfulness and pain. Using diverse mediums, from painting and digital drawings to ceramics, sculpture and robotics, Butler and Ryan explore and question how we experience everyday life and interact with art.
The works displayed in their joint exhibition, Gratified, evoke an underlying discomfort. Butler’s ceramics and Ryan’s kinetic pieces are fragile and beautiful yet clinical in appearance, influenced by consumer culture and environmental concerns.
