Comprising playful arrangements of old and new, Fantastical Worlds reveals the creativity behind contemporary and historical designs and highlights work from artists and designers Timothy Horn, Alexander McQueen, Kate Rohde, and Timorous Beasties. Inspired by elaborate European art styles from the past, such as Baroque, Rococo and Empire, they imaginatively transform historical ideas and motifs into striking contemporary creations.
Some ninety works of art make up this new and larger iteration of the Fantastical Worlds exhibition: Powerhouse Museum ceramics, jewellery, silver, furniture, textiles, and fashion are joined by European historical decorative arts and paintings from The David Roche Collection, enriched with pattern and colour and layered with beauty and delightful quirkiness that invite us to contemplate the seemingly bizarre with awe.
