Rookwood Cemetery are hosting their annual sculpture event Hidden, with over 40 artists this year contributing works that explore the notions of life and love, death and loss, memory, and mortality. Nestled, or ‘hidden’ within the confines of historic Rookwood’s burial grounds, the Sculpture Walk is an outdoor sculpture project that was developed by Rookwood General Cemetery Trust as a community engagement project designed to promote the work of both emerging and established artists, in an unconventional context. In addition to this, Derek Williams, Chief Executive Office of the Trust says that the project also brings new visitors to the site, demonstrating that there is far more to Rookwood than simply funerals and memorials.
“Hidden really is about creating a way for Rookwood Cemetery to support the local community.” Williams says. “Our aim is to implement projects that enable us to engage with the public and once again re-populate the cemetery with the living.”
In its 5th year, the exhibition will be complemented by an extensive public program including an artist walk, historical and curatorial tours as well as performances for both the opening and closing events. With strong support from their partners, including Auburn City Council, Sydney Olympic Authority, Sculpture in the Vineyards, and the Groundswell Project, as well as dLux Media Arts and NSW Health, Hidden will no doubt deliver a fascinating display, very much at the intersection of art, history and imagination.
