Ian Strange: Suburban

A street artist, Strange paints directly on the surfaces and facades of suburban homes, and in some cases, burns them to the ground to make a statement about Western-ideas of the home. This exhibition is the culmination of two and a half years travelling through neighbourhoods in the US – Ohio, Detroit, Alabama, New Jersey, New York and New Hampshire – creating a collection of photographic, film and installation works.

He investigates the iconography of the family home and its place in the current economic climate. Strange articulates his own conflicted relationship with suburbia that he experienced growing up in the Australian suburbs, juxtaposed with living in New York City. This exploration of suburban experience articulates a distinctively Australian sensibility to a global audience.
