Each year ‘International Women’s Day’ (IWD) celebrates the strengths and influences of womankind worldwide, while encouraging gender equality. On Sunday 8 March, this year’s IWD focuses on the theme, ‘An equal world is an enabled world’. Inspired by these words, many galleries across the country are celebrating women in Australian art, showcasing their work or hosting special events.
Highlights include; Queensland’s Gallery of Modern Art, where curators highlight the work of women artists within its current multi-installation exhibition, ‘Water’, in a ticketed tour on 8 March at 10.30am.

In ‘SHE’, eight artists from across Australia – Deanne Gilson, Alana Hunt, Vonda Keji, Lily Mae Martin, Kumantjayi Nangala, Tiffany Parbs, Nyaruot Ruth Ruach and Tai Snaith – explore the responsibilities, challenges and joys that come with being a female artist in Australia. On show at Walker Street Gallery in Melbourne from 27 February to 4 April.

From 2 to 15 March, ‘Out of the Box – This Is Us’ at Box Hill Community Gallery in Melbourne celebrates the bond between nine women artists forged while completing their studies at Box Hill TAFE; providing each other with artistic support and encouragement.
Victoria’s Glen Eira Regional Gallery commemorates the achievements of local women through a vibrant and diverse selection of photographs from 5 to 22 March and Griffith Regional Art Gallery in New South Wales celebrates and values leading female artists in ‘Each for Equal’ until 29 March.
‘Embedded 2020’ at Perth’s Flux Gallery presents nine personal interpretations of the domestic quilt from 29 February to 29 March. Curator Sandra Murray comments, ‘This is a visual arts project that recognises the disparity in representation and support of women artists worldwide… The artists unpick and re-stitch the quilt’s meaning to reveal their very personal stories and politics about the bed and what embeds them in it – the quilt.’
