Jamie Boyd: Shoalhaven and Beyond

“A painting has to be good to look at, it needs to be painted with generosity of spirit and conviction and it requires evidence of the artist’s hand. The ability to capture a moment and somehow put it down on paper is important.” – Jamie Boyd.

A master of colour, Jamie Boyd’s images reflect the Australian landscape with a dreamlike tendency that are reflected through his use of tone and light – all of which can be seen and experienced in ‘Jamie Boyd: Shoalhaven and Beyond’ – an exhibition currently on view at Gallery on Sturt, Ballarat. The exhibition is made up of more than 30 oil paintings, lithographs and etching prints.

Born in Australia, he relocated to London as a young adult where he has lived the best part of his adult life. However, frequent return visits to his parents in Bundanon have fed his artistic visions and output, replacing the hustle and bustle of the London’s city life in his paintings for the calmness of a rural Australian landscape. The calmness of the landscape allows him to reflect on the subtitles of a place and time that a rollicking city drowns out.

The son of famed Australian painter, Arthur Boyd, Jamie was born with art in his veins and grew up surrounded by conversations about the important role of art in society. Jamie continues his family’s vision through his prolific artistic output, bringing to his Australian landscapes a new perspective – his international experiences, broadening even further how he perceives and interacts with the world.
