John Leslie Art Prize 2014 | Finalists Announced

Gippsland Art Gallery has announce the finalists for the John Leslie Art Prize 2014, one of Australia’s most prestigious non-acquisitive prizes for landscape painting, and consistently attracts the highest calibre of artists working in Australia.

For the first time artists were able to enter up to two works and this year’s Prize was flooded with entries; 416 entries received from 320 artists, from which the shortlist of 35 entries from 34 artists was made.

The field of entries was drawn from every state of Australia. From the following list of artists the winner will receive the first prize of $20,000, while the winner of Best Gippsland Artist will receive $1,000. The judging panel comprises Tony Lloyd, artist and winner of the 2012 John Leslie Art Prize, Dr Gerard Vaughan, Professorial Fellow, University of Melbourne and former Director, National Gallery of Victoria, and Jane Devery, Curator of Contemporary Art, National Gallery of Victoria.

The finalists for 2014 are: Douglas Abbott (VIC), Michaye Boulter (TAS), Jason Cordero (SA), Hamish Carr (VIC), Dale Cox (VIC), Chris Delpratt (VIC), Mark Dober (VIC), Emily Ferretti (VIC), Janet Green (VIC), Stephen Haley (VIC), Sarah Hendy (VIC), Sophia Hewson (VIC), Chris Langlois (NSW), Frank Mesaric (VIC), Lynn Miller (VIC), David O’Brien (VIC), Michael Peck (VIC), Hobie Porter (NSW), Annika Romeyn (ACT), Laura Skerlj (VIC), Shannon Smiley (VIC), Fiona Somerville (NSW), Chris Stubbs (VIC), Remnin Alexander Tayco (NSW), A.J. Taylor (QLD), Nathan Taylor (TAS), Sarah Tomasetti (VIC), Amber Wallis (NSW), Kim Wilson (VIC), Catherine Woo (TAS), Alice Wormald (VIC), Chee Yong (TAS), Bill Young (VIC), Alex Zubryn (VIC).

The announcement of the winners will be made at Gippsland Art Gallery by the Hon. Peter Ryan MP, Deputy Premier of Victoria, at the official launch on Friday 19 September at 6pm. As with previous years, there will be a People’s Choice Award for most popular artwork.
