Julia Gutman presents Muses, her first solo exhibition. Gutman creates meticulously hand-stitched textile fabrications deeply imbued with collective histories and personal traces of her friends and family whose worn clothing she repurposes as a creative medium. With reference to historical canonical paintings, ten patchworked portraits explore the “the muse” as both mythological figure and person.
“While muses as cultural phenomena can act as an easy euphemism for the patriarchal attitudes of the western canon, their mythological origins are fierce and delightful, full of power and indignation,” Gutman explains.
