Based in Sydney’s Newtown, this year marks 20 years of Lennox Street Studios supporting local artists. To celebrate they will host a free open studio art show, on November 6 to 8, where the public can have a stickybeak and explore the impressive three-level building.
A former disused Catholic school building that was transformed in 1995 into an artist space by National Art School graduates, Malcolm Poole and Steve Perrin. The pair pooled their resources to create a space to combat the lack of affordable studio spaces in the inner city for new and emerging artists. It has also focused on creating opportunities for arts graduates each year, by offering a graduate from the National Art School, a free art space for a year, to help their career.
The artist-run space is made up of 35 studios, and houses artists working across painting, drawing, printmaking, photography and installation.
The studio’s ’20th Anniversary Show’ will let the public have a glimpse at the artistic process as well as show works from a selection of high profile Australian artists, like Tim Johnson, Andrew Sullivan and Michael Fairweather, who each have a studio in the space.
