Newcastle-based artist Lucas Grogan uses drawing and painting to explore themes of isolation, inclusion, and cultural collisions through an autobiographical lens.
For Cabinets, works take inspiration from the cabinet of curiosities of the sixteenth-century, yet, here, Grogan spins his usual web of quirky humour and eclectic imagery. For example, shelves that appear with a balance of objects, books, and florals, upon closer look expose revealing writing: “The complete map of gay bars in Australia,” or similarly, a “Map of the World” with a disproportionate Aotearoa looming large.
