Marie Hagerty’s paintings poetically combine a non-figurative composition with seemingly figurative elements, realised within a high degree of verisimilitude to surfaces and textures. Often the inclusion of what appears to be a woman’s leg, face or torso ushers the paintings into an ambiguous realm, where there is a perception that some sort of feminist narrative is implied but not explicitly stated.
Hagerty’s works use a subtle play of push-and-pull optics across her sensuous rolling surfaces. This unique visual language is continued in this new body of work.
