Marikit Santiago: The kingdom, the power

Marikit Santiago’s works are powerful meditations on personal experiences and global histories of geopolitics, power, cultural identity, gender, art, and family. Using oil paint, gold leaf and found materials, such as cardboard boxes and texta, the artist combines classical figurative painting, biblical narratives, and pop cultural references to confront her own personal history. Here, she explores the Garden of Eden and considers the privileges and obligations of her own “paradise” created for her by her immigrant parents and, in turn, the world she is constructing for her own children.
