Melbourne-based painter Marise Maas uses observations of the everyday as the basis of her practice. She paints objects from daily life, snippets of overheard conversations, and things around her that have come to her attention. Through her loose and gestural painting style, Marise explores the bigger stories in the essence of these seemingly small daily narratives.
‘Open the Box’ is a deeply personal exhibition that sees Maas reflecting and painting her late sister’s possessions. All contained within a single box, Maas has not looked at these possessions for the eight years since her sister’s death. Feeling the time is right, Maas has opened the box and its contents are the subject of these paintings.
