Michael Simms: DRIVE

Michael Simms’ dramatic images utilise light to reveal not only the physical truth of form, but also something of his subject’s internal life. Through teasing out the impulses that drive human behaviour, Simms’ latest exhibition uses the figure to explore Freudian-inspired concepts of identity formation and the subconscious, representing the struggle between an innate drive for creativity, life and productivity and the impulse towards death and destruction.

Simms’ interest in the human compulsion to repeat similar patterns of behaviour is articulated through the deliberate use of visual repetition.
