Curated in association with the Milingimbi Arts and Culture Centre, this exhibition features four senior Milingimbi artists: Joe Dhamanydji, Raymond Bulambula, Helen Ganalmirriwuy and Margaret Rarru.
Renowned for their use of traditional media and imagery, Milingimbi Artists create works of art that highlight the strength and diversity of their culture from this small island off the north coast of Arnhem Land.
Drawing on thousands of years of ancestral knowledge and religious ceremony, the Milingimbi Artists use ochres and white clay to create elaborate paintings on bark and canvas – a practice heavily influenced by their proximity to Indonesia and particularly by a long history of contact with traders from Sulawesi.
